Jacob heard the whine of the MP-17 and prayed to God his people were okay. He focused on his own situation, though. He had figured the camp would be flooded with tangos, but so far none had appeared, that couldn’t last, could it?

Glass shattered as a bottle smashed against the Mudcat, igniting the side of the armored transport in a gout of blue-and-yellow flame.

He spun the turret until he saw two men with primitive projectile weapons slung on their backs, lighting another bottle. Jacob hesitated; he knew what he had to do, but he still wished there was another way. The one holding the bottle lifted to throw. Jacob depressed the butterfly trigger, sending a four round burst that obliterated the man like he had swallowed explosives. His partner screamed as the Molotov cocktail ruptured, lighting him on fire.

“Contact left,” he said into the internal mic.

June pushed her way out, lifting her MP-17 pistol, and fired at the flaming man, dropping him. She crouched at the door, scanning the area.

Owens came out of the building just then, opening the Mudcat door, then swinging around to the stern and dropping to a knee, using the armored rear of the truck as cover.

“Check front, sir,” he said.

Jacob swiveled the turret to the front.

Naki came out next, a sobbing, broken Watanabe in hand as he shoved her in the Mudcat none too gently. She repeated, “I’m sorry,” over and over again as Naki placed her in the seat and buckled her in.

“Sir,” he said. “There’s more. You’re going to need to drive.” Naki went to the front of the ‘Cat and mimicked Owens. “Delta, we’re hoofing it to Romeo-Foxtrot.”

June immediately hefted a grenade from her side and hurled it at the farthest building. The thermite exploded, setting the wooden structure ablaze, adding to the enemy’s confusion.

Jennings hauled two women out of the building and shoved them into the Mudcat. Then Jacob understood. Unbuckling, he dropped down, climbed over the chair, and slid into the driver’s seat. It had been a minute since he took the combat driving course at the academy, but it came back to him as he buckled in and checked the Mudcat’s panels.

“Power, heat, check. No threats,” he muttered as he pointed his fingers at each of the readouts.

A moment later, Jennings shoved three more women in. They were practically crammed in like sardines.

“Go, sir, we’ll catch up,” Jennings said.

Jacob pushed the throttle all the way down, tires spinning in the mud for a heartbeat. Once they caught, the transport surged forward, almost out of his control. He fought back, pulling it into a turn. Tires spinning, he slid around the courtyard before charging out the way they came in.

“Don’t take long,” he said to Jennings as he passed her by. Jacob drove the ‘Cat back the way they came, crashing through the same building. A man came charging out in front of him fifty meters ahead. He held a long tube over one shoulder as a second man stood behind him, trying to shove ammo in.
